News - November 2011
Below are selected items from our November newsletter plus a short report on our recent AGM. Members of the society receive this and other regular updates by email ahead of them appearing on this website.
Society AGM (Thurs 24th Nov)
A summary of the key items:
- The committee was re-elected en bloc (see contacts for details).
- The chairman reported a successful year, a mix of serious work e.g. on planning, and social activities e.g. the successful Broadway evening.
- Finances are healthy. Our bank balance has been boosted, thanks to surpluses on events and raffles. This allows us to support local organisations and charities (see below)
- A cheque was presented to this year's chosen charity - St. Michael's Hospice, Basingstoke
- Next year's chosen charity was chosen after voting on three alternative proposals. The selected charity is Living Paintings, a national charity based in Kingsclere
- David Hamer of the South Central Ambulance Service NHS Trust received a cheque for £1,000 to pay for an Automatic Emergency Defibrillator now kept in the Village Hall. He gave a presentation on the role of Community First Responders and asked for local volunteers who would be fully trained.
- Kevin Pearson provided an update on 'Pride in our Parish' which included painting the railings on the bridge on the Andover Road. He asked for volunteers to help on other small tidy up projects.
- In the Q&A session there was discussion about the effectiveness of measures at Penwood cross-roads and the positions of 30 and 40 mph signs.
Highclere Society Golf Day
Sixteen players teed off at Sherfield Oaks, Basingstoke, on 26th September for the bi-annual Society Golf Day. The weather started off wet and overcast, but soon cleared to become a very pleasant day. The golf was excellent, with three golfers scoring over 40 points and the overall winner this year was Peter Sharp with 45 points - a tremendous round of golf! (you can be sure his handicap will be cut). Patrick Hedgeland, our chairman, presented the prizes which were awarded to Peter Sharp for the longest drive and overall winner, and to James Hirst for nearest the pin. Special prizes were also awarded to David Duffy and Barry Wall.
The next Society Golf Day will be held in Spring 2012.
Salt Bins and Litter
If you see any litter around the village and are happy to remove it, then that would be appreciated or please advise the Parish Clerk, who can direct the litter wardens or the Borough accordingly, but only if you are very precise as to the location. Also if you find that your nearest salt bin is nearly empty, please advise the Parish Clerk. Further salt bins have been requested so please let the Clerk know where you would like these to be positioned.
The Parish Clerk can be contacted on 01635 253802 or parishclerk@highclerevillage.com
Society AGM (Thurs 24th Nov)
The 2011 AGM will be held as usual in the Village Hall from 8.00pm. The committee is offering itself for re-election and there will be an opportunity to vote for next year's charity from the three presented at the meeting. As always, there will be a free bar!
During the evening there will be a short presentation by a member of the South Central Ambulance Service NHS Trust on the benefits and use of Automatic Emergency Defibrillators (AED) and the role of Community First Responders. In recognition of the 15th anniversary of the formation of the Highclere Society, we are delighted that the Society is donating an AED to the village, which is to be installed in the Village Hall.
There will also be a short presentation on the Pride in our Parish initiative that focuses on small projects to improve the environment that we live in.
The Annual Village Christmas Walk
This takes place on Tuesday 27th December starting from The Furze Bush, Ball Hill at 10.30am. The circular walk takes approximately 2 hours and includes a stop for mulled wine and mince pies. Proceeds to Jacksplace Hospice.
